Feilding - Host Town

We are a great town to shop in, to visit, to work or do business in, and Feilding and the Manawatu District is a great place to live.

We have been voted New Zealand’s Most Beautiful Town 14 times, with no traffic lights or parking meters, the atmosphere and lifestyle is relaxed and friendly, and residents can enjoy all the benefits of a major provincial city, just 20kms away.

Feilding has a population of around 15,000, which is a nice manageable size to foster community pride and enthusiasm, with another 14,000 in the balance of the district, and a further 80,000 in Palmerston North. The town serves as a country town alternative suburb of the city, but has an historical and growing role as the agricultural hub of the region, with one of the largest saleyards in the southern hemisphere and an increasing number of rural servicing businesses relocating to Feilding. The town is well placed geographically just two hours drive from Hawkes Bay, Wellington, Wairarapa, Lake Taupo, Mt Ruapehu and Taranaki.

Visitors will enjoy a wide range of 7 day café and dining experiences, a recent national magazine had this to say “Feilding is a centre for gourmet food and this respectable town has the pick of produce from its rich, surrounding farmlands. If you are in the vicinity, it’s well worth planning to be in Manchester Square on Friday to join locals and farmers at our authentic Farmers Market.

Feilding’s town centre has been transformed, with beautiful brick paving, heritage style street lamps and furniture, beautiful planter boxes, and virtually all the old Edwardian buildings have had an appropriate heritage paint scheme applied. The clock tower in the centre of the square was a millennium project and it houses the original restored Post Office clock of 1904. The Boer War Memorial, with new ornate replica light fittings is a recent restoration, and visitors and locals enjoy the bronze Drover and Dog sculpture in Kimbolton Road, the Saleyards Silhouette in Manchester Street, a growing number of murals on buildings, and colourful town banners. These public art works are complemented by a charming array of art at the Art Centre in Kimbolton Road.

There is a real buzz in the town at present with considerable business growth, commercial building, re-development, new residential and rural subdivisions, and ambitious plans for growth. Feilding has attracted significant external investment in recent years. Manfeild Park development is one of the North Island’s most exciting initiatives. Feilding provides the perfect balance of vibrancy and relaxed lifestyle. Our local residents are proud of the positive changes and look forward to welcoming you.

While in Feilding, book a Friday tour of the Saleyards, and visit one of several heritage attractions, including the superb “Coach House Manawatu Horse Drawn Museum”. Book at the Information Centre (06 323 3318), 10 Manchester Square, Feilding. The friendly team will suggest ways for you to enjoy your time with us.
